Sixth
Grade: Mrs. Van Dyke
Mrs. Van Dyke has been a teacher at St. Peter School for the past 18 years. After she graduated from Baldwin Wallace College, she had subbed for half a year. After her subbing experience, she got hired on for the next school year to teach sixth grade. As well as being a teacher here, she is also a former student. She loves the welcoming atmosphere from the parents as well as the students. She also teaches part time at St. Ignatius High School. Mrs. Van Dyke has 3 children, Connery who is in fifth grade, Kayla who is in second, and Brayden who is 2 years old. In her spare time, she loves to bowl, read, swim, and spend time with her family.
Sixth Grade is a very exciting time at St. Peter School. The children are just entering the Junior High. Students receive more responsibility, and switch classes for major subjects. Mrs. Van Dyke teaches Math, Science, Computer and Health. Mrs. Verbus, the seventh grade teacher, teaches Reading and Social Studies. Mrs. Byrne, the eighth grade teacher, teaches Spelling, Religion, and English. In Science, the children get the opportunity to participate in the Science Fair. This allows the students to make a project and get judged, and receive awards for their efforts. In Math, the students have an opportunity in seventh and eighth grade to do Math enrichment. Some eighth graders are even invited to go to high school and take their Math class there.
There is plenty of fun to be had in sixth grade as well. The students are allowed to participate in Lifetime Activities. They are held in the Spring and teaches the children a life skill. Some of the classes that have been offered in the past are cooking, drama, art, yoga, golf, computer design, tennis , sewing , and many others. The children enjoy these activities and they last for six weeks. The children also go to camp. They do this in the spring. It is an overnight outing that teaches them environmental education. Many other field trips are offered throughout the year. Sixth grade is definitely a time of change, as well as a time of growth.
