Third Grade: Mrs. Sisson

I grew up in Parma, Ohio and attended St. Charles Borromeo there from grades K to 8.  I attended Parma Senior High School, and then went on to receive a Bachelor's degree in Business Managment from the University of Akron.  I worked for a few years in retail, before discovering that I had a strong desire to teach.  I then decided to go back to school, this time to Baldwin-Wallace College, where I earned my teaching degree whild working full-time.  I began teaching at St. Charles Borromeo, as the K-8 computer teacher, and then later taught second grade and third grade.

I took some time off to have two children before joining the St. Peter's family.  I began teaching third grade in St. Peter in 2010, and also enrolled my two children in school here.  In fact, we were so impressed wiht the St. Peter family, that we joined the parish, and my husband became a member of the Knights of Columbus.  In addition to teaching one of the thirde grade classes, I am also the science teacher for the whole grade.  I enjoy spending time with my husband and children, as well as reading and exercising.

Third grade is the last stop in the primary grade.  In the beginning of the year, I try to start having the students gain moe independence and responsibility, while still having their parents and me there to rely on when they need help.  After second quearter,  I tell them that they are no pre-fourth graders.  I increase expectations of their behavior, responsibility, and work quality in preparation for moving on to fourth grade.

In the third grade, we study mulitplication and division, parts of speech, and the writing process, while continuing to emphasize vocabulary and comprehension in reading.  Our emphasis in religion is the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, and Jesus' ancestors as well as his life.  We also integrate religion into the other subjects, and in fact, into our whole day, by discussing values, and praying throughout the day.  In science, we cover topics such as plants, animals, landforms, weather, simple machines, the solar system, and the scientific method.

Field trips we have participated in include: The great Lakes Science Center, Stocker Center performances, and the Cleveland Zoo.  I have also had the history museum bring science fieldtrips to the school when they are in the area.
